What is Gelande Jumping?

A Gelande jump is a ski jump that takes place off a natural ramp while wearing alpine skis and boots. The term comes from the German words Gelände which means "open fields" and Sprung which means "jump".

  • The skier crouches low to the ground
  • The skier plants both ski poles in the snow before taking off
  • The skier uses the poles to propel themselves

History of Gelande

  • Gelande jumping began in Alta, Utah in 1963
  • The sport grew in popularity after a competition in Vail in the early 1970s
  • The sport was most popular from 1972–1978
  • Competitions were held in Alta, Durango, Steamboat Springs, Crested Butte, and Jackson Hole (and now here!).

The Event is just above Little Molas Lake

The rendezvous point will be at the Molas Lake campground  09:00 AM.  Walk, ski or snowmobile up - follow the signs. We will have snowmobiles to tow skiers up as well as limited capacity snowcat transportation (sign up for a ride on the waiver).
